In March 2008, after several weeks of
intense competition in three local Primary Schools, the finalists, with their
parents and Head Teachers, were invited to a Club meeting to compete in the
final round of a Spelling Competition. The winning team came from Cloverlea
Primary School. All of the finalists from Cloverlea, Navigation and Broomwood
Primary Schools received a number of prizes for reaching the final round with
the winners received a dictionary as well. The prizes were awarded by 2007-8 President
Iain Bannerman and Graham
Harrison, Regional Manager of Staedtler UK who
sponsored the competition. Certificates commemorating their successes were awarded later.
"Working so that others can
play" might have been a caption for this scene in November 2007 when a
working party lead by 2007-08 President Iain Bannerman went to the Children's
Adventure Farm. Club members (more than are shown here) carried out essential
maintenance work on the picnic tables that are used throughout the Spring,
Summer and Autumn when the Farm is at its busiest.
For the second year in succession an entry from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys
won an award in Rotary's local Young Designer Competition (Electronics Section).
Pictured here are the winner, Richard, and his teacher. The device Richard
designed is intended to dry the handles of hockey sticks .
In January 2007 two teams of
ambitious speakers from Culcheth Hall School, Altrincham took part in a heat of
Rotary's Youth Speaks competition. Busra and Victoria (centre and right, right
hand picture) each won the award for the Best Chairman and Best Speaker
respectively for their presentations on "Has TV gone too far?", and a
'wild card' entry into the Final Round of the competition.
